To contact people, I use an app called Signal. It's a lot like whatsapp, but much more private and not owned by Meta. In fact, it's open source!
You can download Signal on your regular app store, and just need a phone number to sign up.
Security
Suggested: don't use your legal name, and turn off phone number visiblity by going to Settings > Privacy > Phone number and setting both to "Nobody".
Required: keep deleting messages turned on in our DMs.
